The Largest Disc, Cut From Recycled Cardboard

The Disc 24 is the largest pendant in Graypants' Disc range, and in Natural it shows the material at its most raw. The shade measures 61cm across and 26cm tall, built from layers of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut into rings and hand assembled with no dye or stain added. Because it's made from reclaimed cardboard rather than a uniform manufactured sheet, tone and grain vary slightly from one shade to the next, and colour can read differently on screen than in person. Lit, it throws a warm amber glow through the card and casts a strong ring shaped shadow across the ceiling and walls around it.

Natural: Undyed and Unfinished

Natural is the rawest of the Disc finishes. The cardboard is left exactly as it comes, with no dye, stain or paint added, so the warm brown corrugated texture and the layered ring construction stay fully on show. It sits well against exposed brick, timber and other natural materials, and pairs easily with warm metal tones like brass, bronze or blackened steel elsewhere in the room.

How It Works

Each shade is hand assembled from layered rings of laser cut cardboard, bonded with non toxic adhesive and treated with a non toxic fire retardant during assembly. It's hardwired, hung on a 2m black fabric cord as standard (a 5m cord is available, please enquire), with a small round canopy, 10cm across and black powder coated, at the ceiling. It takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which isn't supplied. Choose a dimmable LED if you want to control the light level and the strength of the shadow pattern. As with any hardwired ceiling fitting, we'd always recommend a qualified electrician handles the installation.

Where It Works Best

Given its size, the Disc 24 works best somewhere with room for the shadow pattern to spread: over a large dining table, in an open staircase, or hung in a double height living room. It also suits bedrooms and hallways with a bit of extra ceiling height. It's an indoor fitting, so keep it away from bathrooms or anywhere exposed to damp.

How Scraplights Began

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection started almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard while entering a sustainable design competition, and the material stuck. Graypants now works from studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam, still building each Scraplights shade from reclaimed cardboard by hand.
