A Cardboard Centrepiece, Cast in Warm Light
The Disc 24 is the largest pendant in the Blonde Scraplights range, built from layered rings of reclaimed cardboard that catch the light in soft, textured bands. At 61cm in diameter and 26cm in height, it is sized to anchor a room rather than sit quietly in a corner of one. Once a bulb is switched on, the rings glow amber and throw fine shadow lines across the ceiling and nearby walls, an effect unique to how this shade is built.
The Blonde Finish
Blonde is the natural, unstained cardboard tone, warmer and lighter than the darker Scraplights finishes. Every ring is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, hand assembled into the shade's stepped dome shape, and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive before being treated for fire retardancy. Because the material is reclaimed, colour and grain vary slightly from ring to ring, so no two Disc 24 pendants look quite identical. It works well against warm timber, exposed brick, or plain white walls, where the layered shadow pattern has room to show.
How It Works
The Disc 24 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, supplied with a cord and a round canopy that fixes to the ceiling. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who sets the final drop for your space. It takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W (LED bulb not supplied), and is dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmable LED. Light diffuses through the cardboard rings rather than shining out directly, so what you see is mostly glow and shadow rather than a visible bulb.
Where It Works Best
Its scale suits a dining table, a stairwell, or any double height space where a single fixture needs to do the visual work of a room. It also reads well above a reception desk or in a hallway with a high ceiling. Because the light it throws is soft and atmospheric rather than bright and even, it works best as a feature pendant rather than a main source of task lighting.
The Story Behind Scraplights
Scraplights began almost by accident, when Graypants founders Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker built a cardboard pendant from leftover material for a sustainable design competition, and the shade design that came out of it became the foundation of the whole Scraplights range. Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Junker, who met studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now works from studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
