A Softly Glowing Study in Reclaimed Cardboard

The Disc 20 is a round pendant from Graypants' Scraplights range, with a 50cm diameter shade built entirely from layers of reclaimed corrugated cardboard. In White, the shade takes on a pale, papery finish, so the light it casts feels soft and diffused rather than warm and amber the way the natural cardboard versions do. It is a genuinely unusual looking fixture, more sculpture than standard ceiling light, and it works well as a real centrepiece over a table or in a hallway.

The White Finish

Each shade is cut from corrugated cardboard and hand assembled in overlapping rings, then knife cut rather than laser cut to keep the White finish clean along every edge. The layers are bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and fire treated as part of the manufacturing process. Up close you can see the ridged texture of the cardboard itself, and once lit, the gaps between the layers throw a soft, patterned glow across ceilings and walls. The pale finish sits comfortably against most wall colours and works well alongside timber, white painted joinery, or a plain plaster ceiling.

How It Works

This is a hardwired ceiling pendant, supplied on a 2m white fabric cord with a round white powder coated canopy (a 5m cord is available, so please enquire if you need a longer drop). It takes one E27 LED bulb, maximum 15W, which is not supplied. Choose a dimmable LED bulb along with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to control the brightness, since the fitting itself does not include a dimmer. Because this is a hardwired fitting, it must be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the finished drop length to suit your ceiling height.

The 50cm Disc 20 suits dining tables, living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and staircases, anywhere with enough headroom to let the shade hang as a real focal point. It reads well in a scheme that is otherwise fairly plain, since the shade itself does most of the visual work. Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights range, which the Disc 20 belongs to, began almost by accident: the pair were using leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition when they discovered how the material diffused light once it was layered and lit from within. That original idea is still the basis for every Scraplights shade made today.
