The Disc 20 pendant turns reclaimed cardboard into a genuine light fixture, its layered rings scattering the glow of a single bulb into something closer to candlelight than a bare bulb overhead. At 50cm across, this is the mid sized Disc in Graypants' range, generous enough to anchor a dining table or kitchen island on its own, or to be hung in a small group above a long counter. Finished in Graypants' natural Blonde tone, it reads as warm and honest rather than polished, with the texture of the cardboard itself doing most of the work.

A Warm, Honey Toned Blonde

Blonde is Graypants' most natural cardboard finish, left close to the material's own colour rather than dyed or stained. Layered into rings and laser cut before being hand assembled, the shade catches light unevenly across its surface, so the glow shifts slightly as you move around the room. Because every shade is bonded and finished by hand, small variations between pieces are normal and part of the character, not a flaw. It suits pale walls, timber furniture and other natural materials, and sits comfortably in Scandinavian, Japandi or otherwise pared back interiors.

How It Works

The Disc 20 is hardwired, hung from a 2m white fabric cord and a small round canopy, with a 5m cord available on request if you need extra drop. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied, so you can choose the exact brightness and colour temperature yourself. Fit a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer switch if you would like to bring the light down for evenings. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who can set the finished drop to suit your ceiling height at the same time.

Where It Works Best

Its scale and warm glow make the Disc 20 well suited to dining tables and kitchen islands, where it can sit as the main light without overwhelming the room. It also works well in twos or threes spaced along a long counter or breakfast bar, and its soft, diffused character suits living rooms, hallways and staircases where you want ambience rather than a bright, even wash.

Cardboard Born From a Design Accident

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Disc 20 belongs to, began almost by accident, growing out of leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition rather than a deliberate plan to build a lighting range. That resourceful, make do approach still shapes how each shade is built today, hand assembled from reclaimed board rather than moulded or mass produced.
