A Crisp White Take on the Scraplights Disc

This is the smallest Disc pendant in the Graypants Scraplights range, 43cm across and finished in white. Unlike the natural cardboard Discs, this shade is knife cut rather than laser cut, which keeps every edge clean and pale instead of lightly scorched. The result is a lighter, more graphic version of the same idea: layers of reclaimed cardboard that let light spill out through the gaps and cast a soft, textured shadow pattern across the room.

Knife Cut White Cardboard

Each shade is built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, cut into rings and hand assembled into the familiar Scraplights dome. Because this version is knife cut, the cardboard keeps its pale, almost paper white tone rather than the caramel edges you get with laser cutting. It reads as calmer and more contemporary than the natural finish, and it sits comfortably in an all white room, a pared back Scandinavian scheme, or anywhere you want texture without adding colour.

How It Works

The shade takes a single E27 bulb, 15W maximum, which is not supplied. Choose a dimmable LED if you want to control the mood, since the light itself has no built in dimmer. It hangs on a 2m white fabric cord from a small white powder coated canopy, 10cm across and 2.5cm deep; a 5m cord is available if you need extra drop, just ask. This is a hardwired ceiling pendant, so it needs a qualified electrician to install it and to set the finished drop. The cardboard is bonded with non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant.

Where It Works Best

Its size and softer white tone make it easy to place: over a bedside table, grouped above a dining table, in a hallway, on a staircase, or as a single statement piece in a living room. Because it is made from cardboard, it belongs in dry rooms rather than anywhere steamy or damp, so keep it out of bathrooms and shower areas.

How Scraplights Began

The Scraplights collection started almost by accident, when leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition became the material for the first shade. It has been part of the Graypants range ever since. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati.

• Keep it in a dry room. Cardboard is not suited to bathrooms or other humid spaces, and it should be dusted gently rather than wiped with a damp cloth.
• Shade measures 19cm high and 43cm in diameter, the smallest size in the Disc range. Canopy is 10cm across and 2.5cm deep, in white powder coated finish.
• Comes with a 2m white fabric cord as standard; a 5m cord is available on request.
• CE certified, with a 2 year warranty.

• Can I install this pendant myself? No. It is a hardwired fitting, so it should always be installed by a qualified electrician, who can also set the finished drop for you.
• Does it come with a bulb? No. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum, which is not included.
