A Quietly Sculptural Pendant in Bright White

The Denny is one of the simpler shapes in Graypants' Scraplights collection, a dome built from tightly stacked rings of corrugated cardboard. In white, each shade is knife cut by hand rather than laser cut, which keeps the layered edges crisp and pale instead of the toasted amber tone of the standard cardboard finish. At 34cm across, it is a compact pendant that still throws a distinctive pattern of light and shadow onto the ceiling and walls around it.

The White Finish

Cutting white Scraplights by hand is slower than the laser process used on other finishes, and it shows in the result. The rings keep a pale, almost paper like surface, so the fixture reads as bright and minimal rather than rustic. Each shade is hand assembled, bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. Because the cutting and assembly are done by hand, small variations between one pendant and the next are normal and part of what makes each piece genuinely handmade.

How It Works

Light passes out through the gaps between the cardboard rings rather than through a single diffuser, which is what gives the Denny its layered, textured glow instead of a flat wash of light. The fixture takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W, and the bulb itself is not supplied. Fit it with a dimmable LED if you want to bring the light down for evenings. It hangs on a white fabric cord from a small round canopy at the ceiling, with 2 metres of cord supplied as standard (a 5 metre length is available on request). Because this is a hardwired fitting, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

At 34cm diameter, the Denny suits spots where you want a feature light without a large fixture: beside a bed, above a console table, over a small dining setting, or repeated along a hallway or staircase. Its neutral white tone makes it easy to place in a living room, bedroom or dining room without competing with the rest of the scheme.

Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection, which the Denny belongs to, began almost by accident, when the pair used leftover cardboard to build a lighting piece for a sustainable design competition. That original idea, that waste cardboard could be reworked into something worth keeping, is still what the collection is built around today.

• Handle and clean with a dry, soft cloth only. Cardboard is not suited to damp rooms or outdoor use, so keep it in dry indoor locations.
• Diameter is 34cm, with an overall height of 63cm and a canopy measuring 2.5cm high by 10cm diameter. Cord length is 2 metres as standard, with a 5 metre option available on request.
• Comes with a 2 year warranty and CE safety certification.
