Cardboard Left Exactly As It Comes Off the Reel
The Denny pendant in Natural is Graypants at its most stripped back. The shade is 34cm in diameter, built from layered rings of corrugated cardboard that are laser cut, hand assembled and bonded with a non toxic adhesive. Left in its natural, undyed state, it shows the cardboard exactly as it comes off the reel, ridges, creases and visible layers included, rather than a smoothed or coloured finish. Switched on, it glows a warm amber and throws shifting, textured shadows across the ceiling and walls.
Raw Ridges and Honest Texture
Where other Scraplights finishes are dyed or bleached to an even tone, Natural keeps the cardboard's own colour and grain, pale straw through to darker brown ridges, with the corrugated edge left visible at every layer. It reads as workshop material rather than a designed object, which is exactly the point. It sits well against reclaimed wood, concrete, exposed brick and other raw, unfinished surfaces, and pairs comfortably with black or dark metal fittings.
How It Works
The Denny is a hardwired ceiling pendant, so it should always be installed by a qualified electrician. It comes with a black powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter, and a black fabric cord that runs 2m as standard (a 5m cord is available, please enquire). Your electrician sets the final drop on site during installation. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and connect it to a compatible dimmer switch and the Denny can be dimmed; with a standard, non dimmable bulb it will simply run at full brightness.
Where It Works Best
The Denny in Natural suits rooms where texture is welcome rather than smoothed away: a living room, an entryway, a stairwell, or a boutique hospitality space with an industrial or biophilic feel. It reads as calm and sculptural when unlit, and becomes the focal point of the room once switched on. It also works well grouped in twos or threes above a dining table for a softer, more layered spread of light.
The Story Behind Scraplights
The Scraplights collection, which the Denny belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Denny shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
