A Bell Shaped Glow from Layered Cardboard

The Bell 16 in Blonde is built from Graypants' signature laser cut cardboard rings, stacked into a rounded, bell shaped shade 38cm across and 40cm tall. Left in its natural Blonde tone, the board glows warm amber when the light is switched on, and throws the fine lattice of shadow that runs through the whole Scraplights range. It sits comfortably as a single pendant over a dining table or in a stairwell, and works just as well grouped in twos over a kitchen island.

Honeyed Blonde, Layer by Layer

Blonde is the cardboard's own natural colour, a warm honey and caramel tone with no stain or paint added, so every ring keeps its visible grain and slightly rough cut edge. Lit, the gaps between the layered rings cast a soft, dappled shadow across ceilings and walls. Unlit, it reads as a simple, textured sculptural shade. It sits well against light oak, rattan and linen, and pairs comfortably with brass or bronze fittings nearby.

How It Works

The Bell 16 is hardwired to the ceiling, on a 2m white fabric cord with a small grey powder coated canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). This is a hardwired fitting, so it should always be installed by a qualified electrician, who will also set the final drop on site to suit your ceiling height. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you would like to control the brightness; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness. The pendant carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty, and weighs 0.9kg.

Where It Works Best

At 38cm across, the Bell 16 works well as a single statement piece over a dining table or in a stairwell, or grouped in pairs above a kitchen island. It also suits bedrooms, hallways and living room seating areas where a warm, textural pendant is more welcome than a flat, even wash of light. Because the shadow pattern it casts is the main event, it works best as an accent alongside other lighting rather than the only light source in a room.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Bell 16 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for the whole range. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and every Bell shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings today.
