A Bell Shaped Glow, Ring by Ring

The Bell 10 in Natural is one of the smaller shades in Graypants' Bell family, 27cm in diameter, built from layered rings of cardboard that step outward and then back in to form a rounded bell curve. Each ring is laser cut and hand assembled, so the profile has a soft, sculptural shape rather than a straight sided dome. Left in its natural, unbleached tone, the shade filters bulb light into a warm amber glow and throws a fine lattice of shadow onto nearby walls and ceilings.

The Natural finish is the cardboard's own raw tone, with no stain or dye added. You can see the ridged grain of each layered ring and the fine step where one ring meets the next, a texture Graypants leaves exposed rather than smoothing away. It suits light oak, rattan, linen and other pared back natural materials, and sits comfortably alongside brass or bronze fittings. Because each shade is hand assembled, expect small, natural variation in tone and texture piece to piece.

How It Works

The Bell 10 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m black fabric cord (5m available on request) from a small round canopy finished in black powder coating, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, not included. Fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to control the light level; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness. The drop itself is set on site by your electrician at install, and installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician. It carries CE safety certification and a 2 year warranty, and weighs 0.7kg.

Where It Works Best

Because it is one of the smaller shades in the Bell range, the Bell 10 suits a nightstand, a narrow hallway or a stairwell, or a tight cluster of two or three above a small dining table or kitchen island. It also works well as a single, quiet accent in a reading nook or living room corner, where the shadow pattern it casts becomes part of the room's character.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Bell 10 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Bell 10 shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
