The Bell 10 is one of the smaller shades in Graypants' Scraplights collection, an intimate 27cm pendant made from rings of laser cut cardboard that flare gently outward into the bell shape it's named for. In Blonde, the reclaimed board keeps its own natural tone, so the shade glows warm and honeyed even before a bulb is switched on. It's built for close, personal light rather than a big central statement, so it suits a bedside table, a small reading spot, or a run of two or three hung together.

Blonde: The Cardboard's Own Natural Colour

Blonde is Graypants' name for the reclaimed corrugated board left in its own natural state, with no stain or dye added to change its tone. The honeyed colour you see comes from the cardboard itself, laser cut into rings, hand assembled, bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. Because each shade is built by hand from reclaimed material, expect gentle variation in tone and grain from piece to piece rather than a uniform, mass produced finish. It pairs naturally with warm wood, linen and other honest, textural materials, and sits comfortably in Scandinavian, Japandi or organic modern rooms.

How It Works

The Bell 10 is a hardwired ceiling pendant, hung on a 2m white fabric cord with a small round canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, finished in grey powder coating. A 5m cord is available on request, so ask before you order if you need the extra length. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W LED maximum, not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the light down low for evenings. Because the light has to pass through the layered cardboard rings, it comes out filtered and warm, casting the fine, lattice like shadows Scraplights are known for across nearby walls and ceilings. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who will also set the finished drop height for your space.

Where It Works Best

At just 27cm across, the Bell 10 suits close, personal spots rather than a room's main light source, a bedside table, a reading nook, a small hallway or a narrow landing. It also works well in multiples, hung as a run of two or three at slightly different heights above a kitchen counter, breakfast bar or console table. Because the shade filters rather than floods light, it reads better as an accent or mood layer than as the only light in a larger room.

Graypants: From a Cardboard Accident to a Global Studio

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when leftover cardboard from a sustainable design competition became the raw material for the first shade. It's grown since into the layered, laser cut shades the studio is best known for, now made across Graypants' studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
