A Softer, Brighter Take on the Scraplight

The Ausi table lamp in White takes Graypants' signature layered cardboard shade and gives it a cleaner, more contemporary finish. Rather than the laser cut rings used across most of the Scraplights range, the White finish is cut by hand with a knife, which leaves a smoother, brighter surface that lets light through more evenly. At 20cm in diameter, it sits comfortably on a nightstand, sideboard or desk, still built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, still throwing the same intricate shadow play the collection is known for, but in a paler, more neutral tone.

Hand Cut White Cardboard, Cleaner and Brighter

Where Blonde and Natural Scraplights keep the cardboard's own honeyed tone, White is cut with a knife rather than a laser, a small technical difference that gives this finish a crisper edge and a brighter, more neutral glow. The dome is still built from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, layered and hand assembled, so the ribbed texture and shadow pattern are unchanged. It suits a pared back, Scandinavian or contemporary room where a crisp white object works better than raw cardboard tones, and pairs well with pale timber, linen and matte white or brass fittings.

How It Works

The Ausi is a plug in table lamp, supplied with a cord and inline switch rather than needing to be wired in, so it can go straight on a surface near a socket. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W LED, which is not supplied. Fit a dimmable LED bulb if you want to bring the light down for evenings; the lamp itself has no dimmer built in, so dimming depends on the bulb and switch you pair it with. Hand assembly means gentle variation from piece to piece, part of the material rather than a fault.

Its small scale and soft, even glow suit a bedside table, a console or a desk in a living room, bedroom, dining room or hallway. The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection the Ausi belongs to began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
