The Ausi is Graypants' smallest Scraplights silhouette, built for a bedside table or console rather than a ceiling or floor. In Blonde, the natural tone of the reclaimed cardboard is left untouched, so the lamp glows a soft honeyed amber rather than the deeper tones you would see on a stained finish. Every layer is laser cut and assembled by hand, so the ribbed dome on your lamp will be genuinely its own, not identical to the next one off the workbench.

The Natural Warmth of Blonde Cardboard

Blonde is the rawest of the Ausi finishes. The cardboard keeps its own pale, papery colour rather than being darkened or treated, so the ribbing reads almost like corrugated linen up close. Lit, it throws a warm amber glow and casts fine striped shadows across nearby walls and surfaces. It sits comfortably against light oak, linen, and other pale, natural materials, and works as a quieter, softer alternative to the darker finishes in the same range.

How It Works

The Ausi is a plug-in table lamp with a 2.5m black fabric cord and an inline switch, so it works as soon as you add a bulb. It takes a single E27 bulb, up to 15W max LED, which is not included. The fitting itself is not dimmable, so use a dimmable LED bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to adjust the glow. The cardboard shade is bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, and the lamp carries CE safety certification.

Where Scraplights Began

Scraplights started almost by accident, when Graypants entered a sustainable design competition and built a lamp out of leftover cardboard rather than buy new material. It struck a chord, and the cardboard lamp became the collection the brand is now best known for. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati.
