The Ausi 8 in White is the most compact pendant in Graypants' Ausi range, just 19cm across. It is built from layered rings of corrugated cardboard, knife cut rather than laser cut, then hand assembled into a softly rounded drum shape. The White finish gives it a cleaner, more neutral look than Graypants' natural cardboard tones, so the light it casts reads as soft and even rather than warm and honeyed.

Clean White Layers and Soft Diffused Light

Each ring is cut from corrugated cardboard and coated in a matte white finish, then stacked and bonded by hand rather than by machine. The layered structure keeps its ridged, textural profile even under the white coating, so up close you can still see the individual bands that make up the shade. Lit, the gaps between the rings send out soft, even lines of light rather than the amber glow of Graypants' natural tones. Unlit, it reads as a simple, sculptural white drum. It suits pairing with pale oak, white painted woodwork, linen and other light, neutral materials, and works well next to brushed nickel or chrome fittings.

How It Works

The Ausi 8 is hardwired to the ceiling, with a grey powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter, and a white fabric cord that runs 2m as standard (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). The drop itself is set on site at installation, and as with any hardwired fitting, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. If you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch, the Ausi 8 can be dimmed; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Ausi 8 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Every Ausi 8 shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
