Raw Kraft Cardboard, Exactly As It Is

The Ausi 8 in Natural is the plainest expression of Graypants' reclaimed cardboard shade, left in its raw kraft tone with none of the surface treatment used on the other Ausi finishes. It is the smallest shade in the Ausi family, just 19cm in diameter, built from layered rings of corrugated cardboard that are laser cut and hand assembled into a softly faceted dome. Nothing is painted or dyed here, so the ridges, edges and papery grain of the material stay fully visible.

Untreated Kraft Tone, Ridge by Ridge

Each ring is cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard and stacked by hand, then bonded with a non-toxic adhesive before the whole shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant for safe indoor use. Left untreated, the Natural finish shows the cardboard's own warm kraft brown, with every ridge and cut edge on display rather than smoothed away. It sits comfortably alongside raw timber, linen, rattan and other honest, textural materials, and pairs well with black or bronze fittings nearby.

How It Works

The Ausi 8 is hardwired to the ceiling on a 2m black fabric cord (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire), finished with a black powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter. The drop itself is set on site by your electrician at installation, so have a qualified electrician handle the fitting. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied, and works with a dimmer switch as long as you fit a compatible dimmable LED bulb. Once lit, the untreated cardboard filters the bulb's light into a particularly rich, amber glow and throws fine shadow detail across nearby walls and ceilings.

Its compact scale makes the Ausi 8 in Natural well suited to a bedside pairing, a small dining nook, or a cluster hung at varying heights above a console table. The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Ausi 8 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could filter light beautifully and cast striking shadows. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Ausi 8 shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
