A Softer Take on the Scraplight, Cut by Hand

The Ausi 14 is one of Graypants' signature Scraplights pendants, built from layered corrugated cardboard that is cut, glued and finished by hand. Most Scraplights are laser cut in Graypants' natural cardboard tones, but the White finish works differently. A laser would scorch the edge of pale card, so this shade is knife cut instead, a slower process that keeps every ridge and edge clean and bright. At 39cm across, it reads as a genuine centrepiece rather than a background fitting.

Corrugated Cardboard, Finished in Crisp White

Each shade is built up layer by layer from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, then bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The White finish keeps the natural ribbed texture of the card fully visible, so the layered edges catch the light rather than disappearing into a flat surface. It sits well against pale walls, plaster and light timber, and pairs easily with warm metals like brass or black iron elsewhere in the room.

How It Works

• Takes one E27 bulb, up to 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied.
• Dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmable LED bulb.
• Hangs on a 2m white fabric cord from a grey powder coated canopy (10cm diameter, 2.5cm high). A 5m cord is available on request for taller ceilings.
• Hardwired for installation by a qualified electrician, who will also set the finished drop height on site.

A Seattle Studio, and a Design Accident

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection is said to have started almost by accident, when the pair began experimenting with leftover cardboard at a sustainable design competition and found that the material, cut and layered, made a surprisingly beautiful light source. Every Scraplights shade, including this one, is still cut and assembled by hand.
