It is built from layered rings of corrugated cardboard, laser cut and hand assembled into a softly faceted dome. Honeyed Layers With Room to Read as a Feature

Each ring is cut from corrugated cardboard and stacked by hand, so the surface keeps its natural grain and slightly rough edge. In Blonde, that means warm honey and caramel tones with visible layering, rather than a flat, uniform surface. At 28cm across, the Ausi 12 has enough presence to hold its own over an island or breakfast bar, while still reading as a single, quiet shade rather than a big statement piece. Lit, the gaps between the rings throw fine, lattice like shadows across ceilings and walls. How It Works

The Ausi 12 is hardwired to the ceiling, with a grey powder coated canopy measuring 2.5cm in height and 10cm in diameter, and a fabric cord that runs 2m as standard (a 5m cord is available on request, please enquire). The drop itself is set on site by your electrician when it is installed. It takes one E27 bulb, 15W maximum LED, which is not supplied. If you fit a dimmable LED bulb and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch, the Ausi 12 can be dimmed; a standard, non dimmable bulb will simply run at full brightness.

The Story Behind Scraplights

The Scraplights collection, which the Ausi 12 belongs to, began almost by accident. While competing in a sustainable design competition, Graypants co-founder Seth Grizzle started experimenting with leftover corrugated cardboard, and found that layered, laser cut rings of it could hold light beautifully and cast striking shadows. That discovery became the starting point for Scraplights. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its pieces across studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam. Every Ausi 12 shade is still hand assembled from individual cardboard rings, so no two are ever quite identical.
