Some pendants fill a room; the Arcturus commands one. At 163cm across, this is the largest silhouette in Graypants' Scraplights collection, and it is also a genuinely large, heavy fixture: 163cm in diameter with a 137cm drop, weighing 22kg. Built from layer upon layer of reclaimed corrugated cardboard, laser cut into rings and hand assembled around a central glass diffuser, it turns a waste material into a piece of architecture overhead.

Natural Finish, Glass Diffuser Core

Left in its raw kraft tone, the shade reads almost like sedimentary rock, every seam and stacked ring left visible as part of the design rather than hidden. Unlike smaller Scraplights, the Arcturus is built around a glass diffuser at its centre, which anchors the light source and lets it cast a warm, honeyed glow through the fluted cardboard layers, with dramatic shadow patterns across ceilings and walls once lit.

How It Works

Each ring is laser cut from reclaimed corrugated cardboard, then hand assembled with a non toxic adhesive and treated with a fire retardant. The finished shade is hardwired, suspended on a 5m black fabric cord from a ceiling canopy, and fitted with 9 E27 sockets taking bulbs of up to 15W LED each, not included. It is dimmable only when paired with dimmable bulbs, and because of its weight, installation should be planned with your electrician in advance to make sure the ceiling fixing point can properly support it.

The Arcturus is built for spaces that can match its scale: soaring stairwells, hotel lobbies, and double height living spaces where a smaller Scraplight would simply disappear. It is a genuine centrepiece, not a fixture to tuck into a standard height room.

The Story Behind Scraplights

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights series began almost by accident, born from a sustainable design competition where the pair built lights from leftover cardboard to fill space in their exhibit, and the lights drew more attention than anything else on show. Nearly two decades on, every Scraplight is still made by hand, now across studios in Seattle and Amsterdam.
