A Cardboard Pendant That Wears Its Rings Like Growth Lines

The Allyn pendant is built from concentric rings of corrugated cardboard, laser cut and stacked into a single 36cm diameter dome. In this Natural finish the cardboard is left unbleached, so every ring keeps its raw, slightly toasted colour rather than being dyed or painted. Switched on, light filters out through the layered edges and throws a soft, dappled shadow across the ceiling and walls around it, which is the signature effect the whole Scraplights range is built on.

The Natural Finish

Natural is the rawest of the Allyn colourways. There is no stain or coating beyond the finish the cardboard already has, so you get warm browns running through each ring, faint variation from sheet to sheet, and the slightly fibrous texture of corrugated card up close. It sits comfortably against timber, linen, rattan and other natural materials, and reads as sculptural on its own or, hung in twos or threes at staggered heights, as a cluster.

How It Works

Allyn is a hardwired ceiling pendant, so it needs to be connected to a proper installation point by a qualified electrician rather than plugged in. It takes a single E27 bulb, rated up to 15W LED, which is not included. Fit a dimmable LED lamp and the pendant will dim, provided it is wired to a compatible dimmer switch. The cord is 2m of black fabric cable as standard, with a 5m length available on request, and drop is set by your electrician at the point of installation.

Where It Works Best

At 36cm across, Allyn works well as a single statement piece over a reading nook, entry table or small bar area, or grouped together over a dining table or staircase for more impact. It suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and stairwells, and pairs naturally with Scandinavian, Japandi and organic modern interiors where the shadow pattern has room to fall against a plain wall or ceiling.

Graypants and the Scraplights Story

Scraplights began almost by accident. Early pieces in the range came out of a sustainable design competition, made from leftover cardboard rather than any material chosen up front, and the technique stuck. Graypants itself was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and the brand now makes its lighting across studios in Seattle and Amsterdam.
