A Honey Toned Ring of Layered Light

The Alki pendant in Blonde takes its name from the natural, honeyed tone of the reclaimed corrugated cardboard before any darker finish is applied, so the shade itself glows warm even switched off. Each shade is laser cut into a series of layered rings, then hand assembled and bonded with a non-toxic adhesive by craftspeople at Graypants' Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam studios. At 32cm in diameter, it works well as a single striking pendant over a dining table or clustered in twos above a kitchen island.

Blonde: Raw Cardboard, Honest Texture

Blonde is the most natural of the Alki finishes, the corrugated cardboard left in its raw tone rather than darkened or dyed. Held up to the light, the layered rings show every cut edge and ridge, giving the shade a texture closer to driftwood or unfinished timber than anything obviously made from packaging material. It sits comfortably alongside light oak, linen and pale plaster, and reads as considered rather than raw in a Scandinavian, Japandi or organic modern room. Because each shade is hand assembled, expect gentle variation in the exact pattern of the rings from one pendant to the next.

How It Works

The shade measures 19cm in height and 32cm in diameter, built from laser cut rings of corrugated cardboard bonded with a non-toxic adhesive and treated for fire safety. It hangs on a 2m white fabric cord (a 5m cord is available on request) from a white powder coated canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm in diameter, ready for a qualified electrician to hardwire at your chosen drop. It takes a single E27 bulb, 15W LED maximum, not included. Fit a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to bring the glow down for evenings.

Born From a Sustainability Competition

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. The Scraplights collection began almost by accident, when the pair entered a sustainable design competition and built their first cardboard shades from leftover packaging material rather than buying anything new. That resourceful, hand assembled approach has stayed at the core of the collection ever since, made across Graypants' studios in the Pacific Northwest and Amsterdam.
