A Wall Light That Wears Its Own Weather

The Roest Sconce 30 is a hardwired wall light that throws light both up and down from a single fixture, in a finish that is real oxidised steel rather than anything printed or sprayed on. The rust is allowed to form naturally and then sealed once it reaches the right tone, so the colour stops moving but keeps every mark of how it got there. That means no two sconces are quite identical, and this one carries its own version of that story.

Rust, Left to Do Its Own Work

The body is naturally rusted steel, sealed in place rather than painted to look that way. Up close the surface is rough and slightly uneven, with warm browns and burnt orange running through it, more like a piece of reclaimed metal than a manufactured fitting. It sits well against exposed brick, dark timber, concrete or worn leather, and reads as industrial without feeling cold, since the colour itself is warm.

How It Works

This is a hardwired fixture, fitted directly to the wall by a qualified electrician rather than plugged in. Once installed, it sends light both upward and downward at the same time from a single point, which softens a corridor or frames whatever is either side of it, a bed, a doorway or a fireplace. It takes 2 x 10W max GU10 LED bulbs, not supplied, and is compatible with a suitable dimmer if you want to bring the light down for evenings.

Where It Works Best

Its dual direction makes it well suited to hallways and corridors, where it lights the space without needing a central fitting. It also works either side of a fireplace, flanking a bed as a pair of reading lights, or in a living room, kitchen or dining room where you want a warm, sculptural point of light rather than flat overhead lighting.

Handmade by Graypants and VanJoost

The Roest collection was developed by Graypants with the Dutch design studio VanJoost, led by designer Joost van Veldhuizen, and each piece is hand finished in the Netherlands. The rust is allowed to develop on the steel before being sealed at the right moment, which is why the finish reads as genuinely weathered rather than decorative, and why colour and texture vary slightly from one sconce to the next.
