A Rust Patina, Frozen at Just the Right Moment

The Graypants Roest Ceiling 20 is a small steel pendant left to rust in the open air, then sealed the moment its patina reaches the depth of colour you see here. It is the smallest ceiling pendant in the Roest range, at 20cm height and 11.6cm diameter, which makes it an easy fit for grouping several together rather than hanging just one. Every shade oxidises a little differently before it is sealed, so no two pendants age in quite the same way.

Oxidised Steel in a Deep Rust Finish

This finish is raw steel that has been allowed to rust naturally, rather than painted or powder coated to look that way. The surface carries genuine texture, mottled and uneven in tone, running from deep orange through to near black in places. Because the rusting happens before sealing rather than after, the finish stops changing once it reaches you. It suits interiors built around honest, unfussy materials, think Scandinavian, Japandi or industrial schemes where wood, stone and raw metal are left to speak for themselves.

How It Works

The pendant is hardwired to a ceiling canopy on an adjustable cord, so the finished drop can be set to suit the space during installation. It takes 1 x GU10 LED bulb, up to 10W, which is not supplied. Choose a dimmable GU10 LED and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch if you want to vary the light level. Because this is a hardwired fitting, it should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its small scale is really the point. Hang three or five together over a kitchen island or dining table, stagger a run of them along a stairwell, or use a single pendant above a desk or bedside table where a larger shade would feel heavy handed. It works equally well as a considered single accent in a kitchen or office, or repeated in a row as a run of light.

Handmade in the Netherlands

The Roest collection was developed with Dutch design studio VanJoost, led by designer Joost van Veldhuizen, and each piece is handmade in the Netherlands. The steel is left to oxidise naturally and only sealed once the rust has reached the right tone, which is why no two pieces are ever quite identical.
