A Statement Piece in Naturally Rusted Steel

The Roest 150h is the largest drum pendant in Graypants' Roest collection, built to anchor a room rather than simply light it. The drum measures 150cm in length with a 6cm diameter, finished with a small powder coated canopy (2.5cm high, 10cm diameter) and hung on a 2m black fabric cord, with 5m cords available on request. The steel shell is naturally oxidised rather than painted, so the exact tone and patterning vary from piece to piece, and the whole fixture weighs 6.6kg once assembled. Light spills warmly downward from inside the drum while the weathered exterior reads almost like reclaimed architectural metal.

The Rust Finish, Explained

Rust is one of two standard finishes in the Roest range, achieved by letting the steel oxidise naturally rather than applying paint or a powder coat to imitate the look. Graypants seals the surface once the rust reaches the tone they want, which stops the process rather than reversing it, so the colour you receive is the colour that stays. Expect warm rust reds, oranges and darker patches across the surface, no two pendants are identical. It works well against raw materials like timber, concrete, leather and exposed brick, and suits industrial, rustic or warm minimalist interiors particularly well.

How It Works

The Roest 150h is a hardwired ceiling pendant, suspended on an adjustable black fabric cord (2m as standard, 5m available on enquiry) with a black powder coated ceiling canopy. It takes a 14.4W integrated LED light source with a warm 2700K colour temperature, and it is Triac dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmer switch. The fitting houses a single light source. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, as with any hardwired ceiling fixture.

Where It Works Best

Its scale suits open plan living spaces, entrance halls, stairwells and double height rooms, as well as dining tables and kitchen islands that can take one large fixture rather than several smaller ones. It also works well in hospitality and office settings, anywhere a single striking pendant needs to do the visual work a whole cluster might otherwise do. Because of its size and industrial character, it suits confident, open spaces better than smaller domestic rooms with low ceilings.

The Roest collection was developed by Graypants with Dutch design studio VanJoost, led by designer Joost van Veldhuizen. Every piece is handmade in the Netherlands, with the steel left to oxidise naturally before being sealed once it reaches the tone Graypants is after. That process is why no two Roest pendants are ever quite identical.
