The Biggest Drum in the Kerflights Family

The D9 is the largest silhouette Graypants makes in its Kerflights collection, a full 83cm across and 32cm tall, built from slats of wood scored and bent into a smooth cylindrical drum. In this Whitewash finish, the timber stays pale and light, so the fine kerf lines cut into every slat glow warmly once it's lit, tracing a soft linear pattern across the ceiling and nearby walls. It's a genuine centrepiece, so give it a room with some height and space to breathe.

The Whitewash Finish

Each slat is birch plywood, kerf cut along its length so it curves into the drum shape without splitting, then hand assembled by Graypants. The Whitewash finish keeps the timber pale rather than dark or natural toned, which makes a fixture this size feel lighter and airier than its scale suggests. As with any washed timber piece, expect gentle, natural variation in grain and tone from one drum to the next, and be aware that screens show colour and finish slightly differently from device to device. It suits Scandinavian, Japandi and organic modern rooms particularly well, and pairs easily with light woods, linen and plain painted walls.

How It Works

Light escapes through the kerf lines cut into the wood, so instead of one bright point, the D9 casts a soft, linear glow through its whole surface and throws that same pattern onto the ceiling and nearby walls. Inside sit three E27 (E26 in the US) lamp holders, each taking an LED bulb of up to 15W, bulbs are not supplied, and the fixture is dimmable when fitted with dimmable bulbs. It hangs on a 2 metre grey fabric cord from a small grey powder coated canopy, and a 5 metre cord is available on request, please enquire. This is a hardwired fitting, so it should always be connected by a qualified electrician rather than fitted as a DIY job.

Its scale makes the D9 best suited to rooms with some height and space around it: over a dining table, in a double height stairwell, above a hallway console, or as a lobby centrepiece. Graypants, from Seattle to the World

Graypants was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, who met while studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Kerflights is one of several collections that grew out of that studio, built around the same idea: take one material, cut or shape it, and let the light do something a plain lampshade can't.
