The Graypants Barro Single Pendant in Natural Clay pairs a raw, unglazed clay crown with a clear glass diffuser, so the bulb's warmth spills out openly rather than staying trapped behind smoked or tinted glass. It is a small, single drop pendant, just 17cm across and 35cm tall, made for one confident point of light rather than a big statement. Because the clay body is turned and finished by hand, expect small natural variations in tone from piece to piece.

Natural Clay, Left Honest

This version leaves the ceramic body in its raw, natural clay tone, without the darker reactive glazes used elsewhere in the Barro range. Underneath it, the clear glass diffuser is ribbed rather than smooth, so light catches on each vertical line as it passes through. Together the two materials read as warm and textural rather than polished, and sit comfortably alongside timber furniture, linen and other natural materials in a Japandi or organic modern room.

How It Works

The pendant hangs from a black fabric cord fixed to a black powder coated ceiling canopy, 2.5cm high and 10cm across. A 2m cord comes as standard, and a 5m cord is available on request. It takes a single E27 bulb rated up to 15W, which is not supplied. Choose a dimmable E27 bulb if you want to lower the light in the evenings; the fitting itself has no dimmer switch of its own.

Where It Works Best

Its small footprint suits spots that need one warm point of light rather than a spread: a single drop over a small breakfast bar, as a bedside pendant, above a console table in a hallway, or repeated in a row over a longer kitchen island. It works equally well in a kitchen, living room, bedroom or dining room.

Handmade in Oaxaca

Barro comes from a collaboration between Graypants and ceramicist Caterina Moretti of the design studio Peca, working with local artisan Amando Pedro in Oaxaca, Mexico. Amando works in the barro negro pottery tradition of San Bartolo Coyotepec, a technique going back more than 2,500 years. Each clay body is wood fired for nine hours, then hand polished with river stones rather than glazed, which is what gives every piece its own small variations in tone. The glass diffuser is blown separately, in a workshop about 16km away in Oaxaca City, before the two parts are brought together.

• What bulb does the Barro Single Pendant need? It takes one E27 bulb rated up to 15W. A bulb is not included, so choose one separately, and pick a dimmable E27 bulb if you want to lower the light level in the evenings.
