The Barro Single Pendant in Charcoal Grey pairs a hand thrown stoneware body with a smoked glass diffuser, casting a moody, contained pool of light rather than a bright wash. It is the product of a genuine craft collaboration: Graypants worked with ceramicist Caterina Moretti and Oaxacan artisan Amando Pedro to bring a centuries old pottery technique into a modern lighting fixture.

The Charcoal Grey finish comes from a second firing, deepening the clay's natural tone before it is hand polished smooth with river stones rather than glazed. Paired with a smoked glass diffuser, it keeps the light low and atmospheric, ideal for evenings when you want ambience rather than brightness. Because the body is hand thrown, no two pendants are quite identical, a mark of honest craft rather than a flaw to smooth away.

How It Works

Each shade begins with clay dug locally in San Bartolo Coyotepec, home to the barro negro pottery tradition Amando Pedro works in, a technique practised in the region for more than 2,500 years. The glass diffuser is blown separately in a workshop in Oaxaca City, just 16km away. On your wall or ceiling, the pendant is cord suspended from a ceiling canopy and fitted with a single E27 lamp holder, ready for an electrician to hardwire at your chosen drop.

Its warm, contained glow suits a dining table, a kitchen island or a reading nook, anywhere you want atmosphere rather than a bright, even wash. Pair it with a dimmable E27 bulb to bring the light down low for evening entertaining.

A Craft Collaboration Rooted in Oaxaca

Graypants built the Barro collection around two Oaxacan makers: ceramicist Caterina Moretti, whose studio Peca specialises in reviving pre-Hispanic craft techniques, and Amando Pedro, a barro negro potter from San Bartolo Coyotepec. Each piece is hand formed in plaster moulds, fired for nine hours in a wood fired kiln, then hand polished with river stones instead of glaze, giving the ceramic its distinctive, subtly variable surface.

• Will my Barro pendant look exactly like the photo? Close, but not identical. Each shade is hand thrown from clay and hand polished with river stones rather than glazed, so subtle variation in tone and texture is normal and expected.
• Can I dim this light? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable E27 LED bulb (not included) and use it with a compatible dimmer switch.
