The Austen Single brings a proper period silhouette to a bathroom wall, a fluted glass shade flaring upward from a slim, ball jointed arm finished all over in polished brass. It suits either side of a mirror or on its own above a basin, throwing light up and out rather than straight down at whoever's at the sink.

Finish

The arm, ball joint and ribbed backplate are aluminium, finished in a polished brass plate buffed to a warm, mirror bright shine rather than a soft brushed look. The backplate carries a run of fine concentric rings, and the same reeded banding continues at the collar where the glass meets the fitting, small touches that keep the piece feeling considered rather than plain. If you're working to a cooler palette elsewhere in the room, the same design is also available in polished chrome and polished nickel.

How it works

A single G9 bulb sits inside the fluted glass shade, which opens upward and outward like a small trumpet. Because the opening faces the ceiling rather than the room, light is thrown up and diffused across the ceiling and wall instead of shining straight out, giving a soft wash rather than a spotlight. It takes a 3W LED G9 bulb, not supplied, and it's dimmable when fitted with a dimmable bulb on a compatible circuit.

Rated IP44, the Austen Single is built for bathroom use and works well flanking a mirror or mounted above a basin, where the upward throw softens shadows across the face rather than casting them down. Its single arm design also has a small footprint on the wall, so it fits into narrower spaces beside a cabinet or between two mirrors where a twin arm fitting wouldn't sit comfortably.
