A Square Profile Step Light With Two Beams in One
The WL342 is a compact recessed fitting for lighting a step or path edge without dazzling anyone using it. A single 2.6W LED sits behind an asymmetric lens that splits the output in two directions at once, a wash down onto the tread so the edge is visible, and a horizontal spread out across the walkway beyond it. Look closely at the face and you will see a shell shaped lens set into a square, bevelled flange with a small embossed Collingwood mark, a squarer, more architectural take on the round WL340 elsewhere in the same family.
The Brushed Stainless Steel Finish
This listing is the brushed stainless steel version, machined from marine grade 316 stainless and given a soft, linear brushed texture rather than a mirror polish. It reads as understated once fitted, since only the flange face and lens sit proud of the wall or step. The square profile and cooler tone suit contemporary render, natural stone, composite decking or timber cladding, and the 316 grade resists pitting in salty coastal air. Collingwood also lists this same fitting in an antique brass finish as a separate listing, for anyone matching a warmer, more traditional scheme instead.
How It Works
Wiring runs straight to mains at 2.6W with the driver built into the fitting itself, connected in parallel, so there is no separate transformer or control box to accommodate. It is offered in three colour temperatures, each its own listed option here: 2700K extra warm white at around 49 lumens, 3000K warm white at around 50 lumens, and 4000K neutral white at around 59 lumens, all through the same fixed 50 degree asymmetric beam and a CRI of 80. An installation tube is supplied for setting the body into soil, stone or masonry, and the cut out needed is 80mm. Rated IP65, it is sealed against dust and against water jets from any angle, and built to take being walked on rather than just rained on.
Because it carries an IP65 rating, it also satisfies bathroom zone 2, so it can double as a step or threshold light in a wet room as well as outdoors. Moonlight's guide to bathroom lighting zones explains what that rating covers in practice.
Where It Works Best
Think of the places feet actually land: a run of garden steps, the edge of a raised deck, a path to a front door, or a low wall base lighting a driveway or side return. The 316 stainless build makes it a sound choice for coastal or exposed properties where cheaper metals would eventually mark. Indoors, its IP65 rating means it can also be recessed into a wet room step or shower room threshold, somewhere a standard interior fitting would not be rated to go.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and builds its LED fittings at its own site in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked exclusively in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the earlier suppliers to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products into the UK electrical wholesale trade. It has also picked up an EcoVadis Gold medal, a result that puts it in the top 5% of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability performance.
Good to Know
- Covered by a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- IP65 rated: fully dust sealed and protected against water jets from any direction, so it suits exterior steps and paths as well as bathroom zone 2.
- Class I electrical rating, so it must be wired with an earth connection.
- Runs straight to mains with the driver built in and wiring in parallel. Supplied as a fixed output fitting with no dimming control.
- 316 grade stainless steel resists corrosion outdoors. Wipe the brushed face with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the finish.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What shape is the Collingwood WL342 flange?
It has a square, bevelled flange measuring roughly 98mm by 98mm, which distinguishes it from the round flange on Collingwood's WL340 step light.
What colour temperatures does the WL342 stainless steel step light come in?
It is sold in three versions, 2700K at around 49 lumens, 3000K at around 50 lumens, and 4000K at around 59 lumens, all through the same 50 degree asymmetric beam.
Can the WL342 be walked on once installed?
Yes, it is IP65 rated and built to take pedestrian foot traffic, not just splashing rain, which is what makes it suitable for a step tread rather than only a wall.
Does the WL342 need a separate driver or transformer?
No, it wires straight to mains at 2.6W with its driver built into the fitting, so no external transformer or control gear is needed.
What is included for fitting the WL342 into a step or path?
It comes with an installation tube designed for setting the body into soil, stone or masonry ahead of wiring it in.
