A Step Light That Does Two Jobs at Once
The WL340 is a small recessed fitting built to solve a specific problem: lighting a step so you can see the tread without glare, while still throwing a little light onto the wall or path beside it. It manages both from a single 2.6W LED source behind an asymmetric lens, splitting the beam into a downward wash for the tread and a horizontal spread for the space just beyond it. Set into a wall base or recessed directly into the step itself, it works either way.
The Stainless Steel Finish
This version is machined from marine grade 316 stainless steel and finished with a brushed texture, giving it a cooler, more contemporary look than Collingwood's cast brass version of the same fitting. The circular flange sits flush once installed, with only the frosted lens showing, so it reads as a clean, understated detail rather than a visible fitting. It suits modern render, stone or timber cladding, and holds up well against coastal salt air thanks to the 316 grade steel.
How It Works
Power comes straight to mains at 2.6W, with the driver built into the fitting itself, so there is no separate transformer or control box to find space for. Wiring is parallel, and the fixture is supplied in 3000K warm white with a fixed 50 degree beam angle. An installation tube is included for setting the fitting into soil, stone or masonry, and the cut out required is 80mm. Because the whole unit is rated IP65 and genuinely walk over rated, it can take foot traffic once installed rather than just being splash resistant.
With an IP65 rating, it also meets bathroom zone 2 requirements, so it can be used as a step or threshold light in a wet room in addition to its outdoor uses. See Moonlight's guide to bathroom lighting zones for what that means in practice.
Where It Works Best
This is a fitting for the places people actually trip: garden steps, the edge of a raised patio, a run of decking, or a path leading to a front door. Coastal and seafront properties suit it particularly well given the 316 stainless build. It also works recessed into an external wall base to wash light along a driveway or side return, or built into a wet room or shower room step where its IP65 rating covers the wetter zones.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood Lighting designs and manufactures its LED products from Sywell in Northamptonshire, and has focused on LED technology since 2002. Collingwood says it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK's electrical wholesale market, helping shift the trade toward LED earlier than many competitors. The brand has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, putting it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability.
Good to Know
- Backed by a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- IP65 rated: sealed against dust and protected against water jets from any direction, so it stays weatherproof outdoors and meets bathroom zone 2 requirements indoors.
- Class I electrical rating, which means it requires an earth connection as part of the wiring.
- Runs straight to mains with the driver built in, so no external transformer is needed. The fitting is supplied as non dimmable and no dimmer module is compatible.
- 316 grade stainless steel resists corrosion in coastal and exposed locations. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive products on the brushed finish.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
