A Step Light With a Job to Do
The WL340 is a recessed ground light built for steps, paths and low garden walls, and it earns its keep with an asymmetric lens rather than a plain round beam. Instead of throwing light straight down in a circle, the half moon lens splits the output, sending some of it onto the tread below and the rest out sideways along the walkway. That is what makes it genuinely useful on a staircase, where you need the step lit but also want enough spread to see the direction of travel. It is rated for foot traffic, so it can be set flush into a surface people actually walk over rather than tucked away out of reach.
Antique Brass That Is Built to Age
This version comes in antique brass, a warm, slightly aged toned finish rather than a bright polished brass, so it reads as an established fitting from day one rather than something that needs years to mellow. The visible face is solid brass with a brushed texture around the lens, while the body and internal parts are 316 stainless steel, the same grade used in marine fittings, chosen so the light does not corrode where it sits in wet ground or near the coast. It pairs naturally with other aged brass hardware such as brass door furniture, garden lanterns or bollards, rather than with chrome or matte black exterior fittings.
How It Works
Each WL340 has an integrated LED rated at 2.6W, available as either 2700K or 3000K, giving roughly 49 or 50 lumens depending on which you choose. The LED is not a replaceable lamp, it is built into the fitting itself. There is no separate driver to find room for, because the light is wired straight to mains and uses parallel wiring, so several units can be run from a single supply without one failing if another is disconnected. In the box is the installation tube used to set the light into the ground or into stone paving, giving a clean, level finish once it is bedded in, plus the fixing tabs on the housing for securing it in place. The cut out required is 80mm, with a visible bezel of 98mm once installed.
Where It Works Best
This is an outdoor fitting through and through. It suits garden steps, terrace edges, driveways and path lighting where you want low level guidance rather than glare, and it can also be angled to wash light up the face of a wall for a subtle uplight effect at low level. Because the internals are 316 stainless steel, it holds up well in exposed or coastal gardens as well as more sheltered courtyards. The IP65 rating means it is built for permanent outdoor exposure to rain and jetted water, and it also carries a bathroom zone 2 rating, so it is suitable for use in bathroom zone 2, such as recessed into a shower room step or a wet room floor edge.
About Collingwood Lighting
Collingwood designs and builds its LED fittings from its base in Sywell, Northamptonshire, and has worked exclusively in LED technology since 2002. The brand states it was among the first to bring fire rated, fully sealed for life and mains dimmable LED products to the UK electrical wholesale market, though this particular fitting is not itself dimmable. Collingwood has also been awarded an EcoVadis Gold medal, putting it in the top 5% of companies assessed globally for sustainability, which says something about how the business is run behind the product.
Good to Know
- Carries a 7 year warranty from Collingwood.
- Rated IP65, meaning it is protected against dust and powerful water jets, so it is suitable for permanent outdoor use and for bathroom zone 2.
- Electrical Class I, which means it requires a proper earth connection as part of the installation.
- Not dimmable. If you want dimmable step lighting, look elsewhere in the Collingwood range.
- The LED is integrated and cannot be replaced separately, the fitting is designed to be replaced as a whole at end of life.
- Wired straight to mains with parallel wiring, so no driver or transformer needs to be housed nearby.
- Clean the brass face with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which will dull the finish over time.
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician.
