A step light that throws light sideways, not out at you

Stepbeam is a small recessed wall light made for stairs, landings and corridors. The lens sits behind an asymmetrical opening, so the light is pushed out and across the tread instead of firing straight off the wall into your eyes. From the front all you see is a 50mm trim and a faceplate. What you notice is on the floor: a soft wash of 3000K warm white with a CRI of 90, which keeps timber, stone and carpet reading as their real colours. The whole thing draws 2.7W.

Bezels, finishes and how the choices differ

The bezel is the part that does the work on this fitting. You pick round or square, then a circle, half circle or slot opening, then black, white or satin chrome. Collingwood coats them in AkzoNobel powder coat, so the black comes out as a flat even matt, the white sits close enough to painted plaster to vanish, and the satin chrome has a low sheen rather than a mirror finish. The opening changes the output as well as the look. You get 65 lumens through the circle opening and 28 lumens through the half circle and slot openings, and the range covers 30 degree and 45 degree beams depending on which plate you fit. Square plates line up nicely with a wall of square switches and sockets. Round ones disappear more readily into plain plaster.

How It Works

The LED is integrated, so there is no lamp to buy now or replace later. It runs at mains voltage with a small driver already fitted inline on the flying lead, which means there is no separate driver to specify or find space for. Wiring is parallel, so a run of fittings sits on one circuit. The body is die cast aluminium, 50mm across the face with an overall depth of 92.5mm, and it drops into a 45mm cut out. The bezel is magnetic and interchangeable, so the faceplate lifts off and clicks back on without pulling the fitting out of the wall. That also lets you leave the plates off until the decorators have finished. Collingwood lists the Stepbeam as compatible with leading and trailing edge phase cut dimmers.

Where It Works Best

Staircases are the obvious home for it. Set into the side wall every second or third tread, the asymmetrical beam grazes the step so people can read the edge without a bright source in their line of sight. It does the same job down a hallway, along a basement corridor, or up the side of a split level living space. Cinema rooms are another good fit, because the floor gets lit and the screen is left alone.
