Two Beams From One Cable Run

The SL230 twin pole puts two spotlight heads on a single spiked post, and each head aims on its own. So one fitting can wash a path from one side while the second head picks out a specimen shrub behind it. This is the straight to mains version, which runs on 220 to 240V AC with no separate LED driver to find a home for. Both heads together draw 11.4W and throw a 40 degree beam. Pick the colour temperature to suit the planting: 2700K for a soft amber that flatters brick and timber, 3000K for a warm white that stays neutral on stone, or 4000K for a crisper light that makes green foliage look green rather than olive.

316 Stainless Steel

This one is built in 316 stainless steel, the marine grade, finished with a fine brushed satin surface rather than a paint or powder coating. Under the studio lights the heads pick up a soft metallic sheen and the pivot collars catch a brighter highlight. It reads cooler and more architectural than the black and bronze anodised aluminium versions of the same fitting, and Collingwood rates it as coastal protected. Stainless steel sits naturally alongside glass balustrades, wire balustrade posts, corten planters and pale stone paving. It stays visible in daylight rather than disappearing into planting, so treat the pole as part of the garden hardware, the way you would a handrail.

How It Works

The pole pushes into soft ground and the sharpened spike carries up to 240mm below the surface, with 845mm of fitting from tip to top. The two heads sit 160mm apart on a crossbar, each one 62.5mm in diameter, and each tilts through 90 degrees and rotates through 330 degrees on its own pivot. You aim them once the pole is in and adjust again when the planting grows.

Wiring is the simple part of this version. A 3m H05RN-F rubberised cable with a 7mm outer diameter comes off the base, and fittings connect in parallel rather than in series, so adding another one later does not disturb the ones already in. The LED module is integral and sealed, so there is no lamp to buy and nothing to replace. Collingwood's JB5 gel filled waterproof connector is the matching part for joining runs underground, and the GH220D tapered hood and GS220D cylindrical snoot in the same stainless steel cut glare further. None of those three are included.

Where It Works Best

Twin heads earn their keep where a single spot would leave half the job undone. Down a path, one head lights the walking surface and the other lifts the border beside it. Against a boundary, one head grazes a fence panel while the other throws up into a tree. Around a terrace or a set of steps, a pair of these gives you light at two levels from one position, which keeps the number of cable runs down. Because it is a mains voltage fitting rather than a low voltage one, it suits longer runs down a drive or around a large garden where a low voltage circuit would start losing ground.
