Most garden spike lights need a transformer tucked away somewhere in the border and a low voltage cable run planned around it. This version of the SL220 does not. It takes a 220 to 240V supply straight from the house, because Collingwood has built the driver into the body of the fitting. That turns the job into something much simpler: get mains cable to the right spot, connect it, push the spike in and aim the head. It draws 5.7W and gives back up to 538 lumens, so a whole run of them asks very little of a circuit.

Bronze anodised, the finish that disappears

Bronze is the SL220 finish for people who would rather not see the light fitting at all. Anodising colours the aluminium itself instead of sitting on top of it like paint, which gives a warm mid brown with a faint metallic depth to it, closer to weathered copper than to a sprayed surface. Pushed into bark, leaf litter or dark planting soil it goes quiet in daylight in a way a black or stainless body never quite manages. Look straight into the head and there is one deliberate piece of contrast: a slim gold toned ring set around the reflector, sitting just behind the clear lens. It settles happily against red brick, terracotta, oak and rusted steel planters.

How It Works

The light arrives in one piece, head, stem and ground spike together, with 3m of rubberised H05RN-F cable already fitted. Up to 240mm of the 440mm length is meant to sit below the surface, so roughly 200mm stands proud once the spike is properly bedded in. The head tilts through 90 degrees, anywhere from pointing straight up to level with the ground, and you set that after the spike is in rather than before. Fittings wire in parallel, so one mains spur can feed several of them. Beam angle is fixed at manufacture and chosen at the point of ordering. The 12 degree narrow lens still reads 200 lux at 5.3m, while the 40 degree flood reaches 200 lux at 2.4m and spreads it over a far wider area. Collingwood's gel filled JB5 connector joins the flying lead to buried cable, and the GH220 hood and GS220 baffle style snoot are there if a fitting lands in a sightline and needs its glare cut.

Where It Works Best

This is an uplighter, and it is at its best aimed at something with structure. Set the narrow beam at the foot of a multi stem birch, an olive or a clipped yew and it carries light the whole way up through the trunk and branches. The wide beam suits mass planting, low hedging and ornamental grasses, where the point is a soft pool of light over a group rather than one specimen singled out. Turned towards a wall it grazes render, stone and brick, which is an easy way to give a boundary some depth after dark. Because it runs on mains, it makes most sense in gardens where a spur already reaches outside, or in bigger schemes where the number of fittings would outgrow a single low voltage transformer. Collingwood also rates the SL220 as suitable for coastal areas, so exposed seaside gardens are fair game.
