A 100W 24V driver built to sit outside
The Collingwood PSMDIP10024 is the box that powers a 24V LED installation rather than a light in its own right. It converts the mains supply into a steady 24V DC output, up to 4.17A and 100W. What separates it from the ordinary indoor driver is the sealed IP66 housing, so it can live outdoors, in a plant room or in any damp spot without a separate weatherproof enclosure around it. It is mains dimmable too, which means the dimmer switch already on the circuit carries on doing its job.

The case is steel and aluminium, finished in matt black, with deep cooling fins running the whole length of the body. Flat mounting feet at each end carry slotted holes so it can be screwed down and lined up without fuss. Both ends are closed with bolted plates and rubber cable grommets, which is where the seal comes from. The top face is printed with the model, the input and output figures and the certification marks, so an electrician returning years later can read what is fitted without opening anything. It measures 228mm long, 70mm wide and 42mm high, and weighs 1.4kg. This is a piece of gear designed to be tucked away, not admired.
How It Works
It is a constant voltage driver, so it holds 24V and lets the connected load draw the current it needs. The label confirms triac dimming on both leading edge and trailing edge dimmers, which is why it suits a retrofit where the wall dimmer is staying put. Collingwood rates efficiency at around 85% with a power factor of 0.60, and builds in short circuit, overload and overcurrent protection.
Connection is by short flying leads rather than terminals. A 0.25m three core cable takes the mains in, brown for live and blue for neutral, and a 0.25m two core cable carries the output, red positive and black negative. The driver is supplied on its own. LED strip, fittings and any junction boxes are separate purchases. Add up the wattage of everything you intend to run from it and keep the total comfortably under 100W, since a driver run right at its ceiling gets hot and ages faster.
Where It Works Best
This is the driver you reach for when the power supply cannot be kept somewhere warm and dry. Typical jobs include feeding a run of 24V LED strip under a soffit or a canopy, lighting a deck or a garden wall, or supplying strip inside an outbuilding where the driver has to be mounted alongside it. Indoors it earns its place in lofts, garages, utility cupboards and plant rooms, anywhere dust and condensation would trouble a plastic cased unit.

Mount it on a firm flat surface with the fins clear of insulation and anything else that would trap heat, bring the mains in on one end and take the 24V out of the other, and keep it accessible for future maintenance.
