A 700mA driver that dims from an ordinary wall dimmer
The Collingwood PSMD700610 is a constant current LED driver that holds a steady 700mA output and takes its dimming instruction straight from the mains supply. That is the part worth pausing on. Most constant current drivers want a separate control signal such as 1 to 10V or DALI, which means running extra cable and adding extra kit. This one answers to a standard dimmer switch on the lighting circuit instead, so a simple job stays simple.
Collingwood rates the output at 12W to 24W across an output voltage window of 17V to 34V. Because the current is fixed at 700mA, that voltage window is what decides how much you can hang off it, and it sets a lower limit as well as an upper one. The brand's own guidance is 6 to 10 of its 1W products, or 2 to 3 of its 3W products, on a single driver.
The unit itself
It is a slim moulded plastic case in white, 155mm long, 35mm wide and just 22mm tall, with pale turquoise end caps at either side. The full specification is printed along the top face, so the model code, the input and the output stay readable once the driver is tucked into a ceiling void where nobody wants to be hunting for a spec sheet.
The end caps come off to reach the screw terminals, which take cable from 0.5mm² up to 1.5mm² on both the input and the output side. That 22mm height is the number that earns its keep. It slides into shallow voids and behind bulkheads where a chunkier brick shaped driver simply will not go.
How It Works
Mains at 220V to 240V AC, 50Hz, arrives at the input terminals. The driver converts it into a regulated 700mA DC output and feeds that to the fittings, which sit in series on a constant current circuit. When the dimmer on the lighting circuit chops the mains waveform, the driver reads the change and reduces the current it delivers, so every fitting on the output dims together and stays in step.
The printed label states that it works with trailing edge or leading edge dimmers, which gives you room to move if the dimmer already on the wall is not the type you would have chosen. It is supplied as the driver on its own. No dimmer, no fittings and no mounting bracket are included.
Where It Works Best
This is a dry location component, so it belongs somewhere sheltered and ventilated. A ceiling void, a loft, an airing cupboard, a service riser, the back of a joinery unit, or a plant cupboard feeding a run of fittings further along. It should never be buried in loft insulation and it should never sit outdoors or anywhere it might catch water or condensation.
