A 24V Driver You Can Dim From The Wall Switch
Dimming 24V LED strip usually means adding a control system alongside it, a DALI line or a 0 to 10V pair, which is a lot of extra wiring for a single run of cove lighting. The Collingwood PSMD3024 sidesteps all of that. It is a 30W constant voltage driver that responds to an ordinary mains dimmer sitting on its incoming supply, so the switch already on the wall does the dimming and nothing extra needs threading through the circuit.
The Unit Itself
It is a plain white plastic case, slimline rather than chunky, 180mm long by 60mm wide and only 35mm tall, weighing 0.5kg. That low profile is the whole point of it. It lies flat in a ceiling void, a shallow cupboard or the back of a joinery panel where a deeper driver would foul the board. A flat lug at each end takes a fixing screw, so it can be secured down properly instead of left rattling loose in a void. The casing is Class II, double insulated, with the terminals sitting behind the end covers.
How It Works
Mains at 180 to 240V AC goes in one end and a steady 24V DC comes out the other, up to 1.25A and 30W in total. Because it is constant voltage rather than constant current, you size it by adding up the wattage of everything it feeds and staying under that 30W ceiling. Collingwood lists it as the driver for their LED strip and for the SL250 path light. The dimming range is 0 to 100%, with a stated loading window of 60 to 100%, so the driver expects to see a decent LED load on the output rather than a token metre of tape. Short circuit, overload and overheating protection are all built in. The input terminals take 0.75 to 4.0mm² and the output terminals 0.5 to 4.0mm². It is supplied as the driver on its own, so the dimmer switch and the LED load are specified separately.
Where It Works Best
This is a driver for indoor, dry positions. IP20 gives it no protection against water at all, so it belongs in a loft void, an airing cupboard, a service riser or a purpose made enclosure, and never outdoors or inside a bathroom zone. Typical jobs are a run of cove or pelmet strip in a living room, under cabinet tape in a kitchen where the client wants the brightness adjustable, a lit wardrobe interior, or feeding SL250 path lights from a dry position indoors while the fittings themselves sit outside. Leave it reachable. The driver is the part of an LED installation most likely to want attention years later, and one buried behind sealed plasterboard turns a ten minute swap into a repair job.
