Most LED drivers have to be tucked away in a dry cupboard or a separate weatherproof box. The Collingwood PSDIP6024 does not. It is a 60W 24V LED driver sealed to IP66, so it can be fixed in an exposed position and left to get on with it. That makes it the quiet problem solver on garden and terrace jobs, where the fittings are outside and the nearest dry void is a long cable run away.

It is a constant voltage unit, which is the type 24V LED strip and Collingwood's 24V ground lights are built to run from. Buyers usually come looking for a 60W 24V LED driver, an IP66 LED driver for outdoor use, or a 1-10V dimmable 24V driver, and this one answers all three.

The unit itself

The body is extruded aluminium with deep cooling fins along both sides, finished in plain silver grey. It measures 200mm long, 70mm wide and 45mm deep, and weighs 1.2kg, so it has real heft to it. Flat mounting flanges at each end let it be screwed straight to a wall, a joist or the back of a plinth. Mains flies in at one end and the 24V output leaves at the other, with the dimming pair alongside. There is nothing decorative about it, because it is meant to be hidden, but the finned casting is the reason it can be sealed shut and still shed its heat.

How It Works

The PSDIP6024 takes 220 to 240V AC mains and converts it to a steady 24V DC supply, up to 60W and 2.5A maximum. Because the output voltage is fixed, you load it up to that 60W ceiling with as many fittings as the wattage allows rather than matching a single fixture. Collingwood's own driver guide lists it as running up to 120 GL018 ground lights, or around 6.2 metres of its LSV45 LED strip. It draws up to 71W at the input side.

Dimming is 1-10V, and it needs a separate dimming interface wired into the control pair to actually dim. Collingwood lists the PDCINT 1-10V interface for its 24V drivers. Left on its own the driver simply runs at full output, which is fine if the circuit is only ever switched on and off. Built in protection covers short circuit, overload and overheating. Supplied as the driver alone, with flying leads for mains, output and dimming.

Where It Works Best

This is the driver for schemes where the power supply cannot be kept dry. Think a run of ground lights down a driveway, deck lighting on a raised terrace, or LED strip washing a garden wall, with the driver clamped to a fence post, a soffit or the underside of decking rather than routed back indoors. It is equally at home in plant rooms, garages and utility spaces where dust and splashes are a fact of life. The 60W ceiling suits a single zone or a modest run rather than a whole garden, so on larger schemes it tends to be used two or three at a time, one per circuit.
