A 700mA constant current driver with real dimming control
The PSDIM700 is the part of an installation nobody sees and everybody depends on. It is a constant current LED driver from Collingwood that holds a fixed 700mA output and takes an analogue 1-10V signal, so compatible fittings can be dialled down smoothly rather than just switched on and off. Collingwood publish an output window of 2 to 71V at 700mA, which works out at roughly 50W of LED load on a single unit. The unit itself
There is nothing to specify here beyond the driver: one output, one current, no finish options. What matters is the shape of it. The housing is 123mm long and 79mm wide but only 22mm deep, and the whole thing weighs around 100g, so it tucks into places a chunkier driver simply will not reach. Collingwood list the construction as steel and aluminium. Connections are screw terminals, mains in on one side and DC out on the other, taking 0.5 to 2.5mm2 cable at both ends. It partners Collingwood constant current fittings rated at 700mA, and works with any 1-10V dimmer, lighting control module or building management output.
How It Works
A constant current driver keeps the current fixed and lets the voltage move to suit whatever is connected. The PSDIM700 holds 700mA and will settle anywhere between 2 and 71V to do it, which is what allows one driver to run a single fitting or several wired in series. On the input side it accepts 110 to 240V AC, draws up to 0.25A, and has a maximum input of 56W with an efficiency figure of 80 percent and a power factor of 0.95.
Dimming is analogue 1-10V. Two control cores run from the dimmer or control output to the driver, and the voltage sitting on that pair sets the light level. This is a separate low voltage signal, so a mains dimmer on the supply side will not control it. The driver is double insulated with a SELV output and has built in protection against short circuit, overload and overheating. It is supplied on its own, so the fittings, the 1-10V control gear and the cable all come from elsewhere in the specification.
Where It Works Best
This is a wiring accessory, so the question is where it lives rather than how it looks. IP20 means it has no protection against water at all, and it needs a dry, protected position: a ceiling void above the fittings it feeds, a service riser, a plant cupboard, a joinery plinth, or a sealed enclosure. If the lights it powers are outside, the driver still stays indoors or inside a weatherproof box.
That 22mm depth is the genuinely useful part. It slides into shallow voids and behind bulkheads and pelmets where deeper units cannot go. It is not a DIN rail unit and it is not plug and play, so plan on fixing it to a board or surface with room to get at the terminals. Typical work is dimmable Collingwood downlights on a 1-10V circuit in an office or retail fit out, feature lighting along a hotel corridor, or a 700mA garden lighting run where only the fittings are exposed to the weather. The rated ambient range runs from minus 25 degrees C up to 50 degrees C, so an unheated loft is fine provided it stays dry.

- Terminals accept 0.5 to 2.5mm2 cable on both the input and the output side.
- Not DIN rail mount and not plug and play, so allow space to fix it down and reach the terminals.
- Keep it accessible. The driver is the component most likely to need replacing years before the fittings do, so avoid burying it behind sealed plasterboard.
- Care is simply keeping it dry and letting it breathe. Do not pack insulation tightly around it.
