A 350mA Constant Current Driver With Serious Dimming Range

The Collingwood PSDAL350M is the box that sits behind the light rather than the light itself. It takes mains power and turns it into a steady 350mA constant current supply for LED fittings, up to 30W of them. What sets it apart from a basic driver is the control side. It answers to DALI, to 1-10V, and to a simple push to make switch, so the same unit can drop into an addressable commercial scheme or a domestic circuit where the client just wants a retractive switch on the wall.

White Polycarbonate, Slim Enough to Hide

The casing is white polycarbonate with a UL94-V0 flame retardant rating, moulded with a slightly ribbed shell and a flat printed label across the top face listing the input and output figures. It measures 123mm long, 79mm wide and only 22mm deep, and weighs 0.1kg. That shallow depth is the useful part. It will lie flat above a plasterboard ceiling or slide into a housing where a chunkier driver would foul the joists. There is no visible finish to match because nothing here is meant to be seen once the job is done.

How It Works

Mains at 110V to 240V goes in, and a regulated 350mA comes out across an output range of 2V to 74V, which is what governs how many LEDs in series it can carry. Collingwood publishes an efficiency figure of 90% and a power factor of 0.95. Terminals accept conductors from 0.5mm² up to 1.5mm². Protection against short circuit, overload and overheating is built in. Collingwood supplies a sync cable with the driver, which lets you link up to 10 units so they dim together as one group instead of drifting apart at the bottom of the curve. The LED fitting itself is bought separately, since this unit produces no light of its own.

Where It Works Best

This is a driver for schemes where the dimming has to be properly controlled. In an office, a retail floor or a hotel corridor running on a DALI bus, it becomes an addressable node on the network. In a house, a shop unit or a small studio with no control system, the push to make input means a single retractive switch handles on, off and level. It gets fitted in the ceiling void above the fittings, inside a plant cupboard, in a bulkhead, or wherever the installer can reach it again for service. Being IP20, it wants a dry, protected position indoors. Do not bury it in insulation and do not put it anywhere it might get wet.
