A Woven Light Sieve With a Moiré Glow

The Tanit S/61 wraps a large pendant shade in thin waxed cotton cord, hand woven across eight flat faces. Where those facets meet, the weave overlaps at different angles and throws a moiré pattern through the light as it escapes, so the pendant reads as texture and pattern rather than a plain glowing globe. At 610mm across, this larger size is built to sit over wide tables and open dining spaces rather than a small breakfast nook.

Hand Woven From Waxed Cotton Cord

The shade is built from one material family: thin cotton cord, waxed and hand woven over an iron and aluminium frame. That waxed finish helps the cord hold its shape rather than sagging under its own weight, and the natural, neutral tone lets the woven texture do the work instead of a colour statement. It's a construction technique Bover uses across several of its woven pendant families, each one scaled and faceted differently.

How It Works

Light comes from an integrated LED plate set into the top of the shade, so it shines upward and diffuses down through the woven cord rather than glaring straight into the room below. It's dimmable with a Triac dimmer, and the drop is adjustable from 640mm up to 2000mm on a 120mm ceiling plate, so it can be set close over a table or given more room in a taller space. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its width and downward glow suit dining tables and kitchen islands, wherever a pendant needs presence without overpowering the space below it. The same soft, diffused light also works well in a living room, above a landing or staircase, or as a single statement piece in a larger bedroom.

Bover began in Barcelona in 1996, when Joana Bover turned a sketch drawn for an architect friend's project into the first piece of what became her own lighting brand. The company still designs and makes its lighting in Spain, working from Cardedeu near Barcelona, and has built a name for hand woven synthetic fibre pieces outdoors alongside intricate woven wood fixtures indoors, such as the Dome family, built from over 170 individually woven beech strips. The Tanit carries that same hand woven philosophy indoors, using cord instead of wood. Bover's Mediterranean design sensibility runs through the range, and the brand opened a US subsidiary in Atlanta in 2012.
