A Pendant Built to Quiet the Room

The Noren S/85 takes its name from traditional Japanese fabric curtains used to divide a space without closing it off completely, and this circular pendant does something similar with sound. Rather than just lighting a room, its dense, layered construction actively absorbs ambient noise, making it a rare fixture that solves an acoustic problem as well as a lighting one.

Engineered to Absorb, Not Just Diffuse

Under the Dark Grey fabric skin sits a core of Basotect sound absorbing foam, backed by an aluminium and MDF frame that gives the 850mm disc its shape. The outer layer is a fire resistant thermoplastic fabric, chosen for durability as much as looks, so the acoustic performance holds up over years of daily use rather than fading with the material.

How It Works

The Down Lighting version sends a single integrated LED downwards, at 14.4W and 2160 lumens in a warm 3000K with a 95 CRI, so colours read accurately underneath it. The Up and Down Lighting version adds a second light engine facing upwards, a further 7W and 1040 lumens that washes the ceiling and softens the overall effect. Both are Dali dimmable, and the drop is adjustable from 1350mm to 3850mm, so it can be set to suit anything from a low ceiling to a double height space. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its scale and acoustic properties suit spaces where sound and light both need managing: open plan offices, restaurant dining rooms, hotel lobbies and meeting rooms all benefit from a fitting that dampens echo instead of adding to it. It works just as well in a large residential living space where a bare, hard ceiling has started to feel noisy.

Bover began in Barcelona in 1996, when Joana Bover turned a sketch made for an architect friend into a lighting brand. Almost thirty years on, the company is still based in Spain, headquartered in Cardedeu near Barcelona, and still designs and produces there. Bover is best known for two very different crafts: hand woven outdoor pieces in synthetic fibre, and intricate wood lattice indoor fixtures like the Dome family, built from over 170 individually woven beech strips. The Noren shows a third side of that same material led thinking, using acoustic engineering rather than weaving to shape how a room feels. The brand carries a Mediterranean design sensibility throughout, and opened a US subsidiary in Atlanta in 2012.
