An Acoustic Pendant Shaped Like a Fabric Curtain

The Noren S/72 takes its name and rectangular form from the Japanese noren, the fabric curtain traditionally hung across a doorway. Rather than throwing light from a single round shade, it hangs flat like that curtain, and works quietly in the background to soak up ambient noise as well as light the space beneath it. In Dark Grey, it reads as a calm, tailored fabric panel rather than a typical pendant.

Down Lighting or Up and Down Lighting

The Noren S/72 comes in two lighting configurations. The Down Lighting version sends all of its output straight down onto the table or floor below. The Up and Down Lighting version splits that output between a stronger downward beam and a softer upward wash that lifts light onto the ceiling too, easing the contrast in the room. Both use the same dark grey fabric finish, so the choice comes down to how directional you want the light to be.

How It Works

Behind the fabric face sits a layer of Basotect sound absorbing foam bonded to an aluminium and MDF frame, so the pendant is doing two jobs at once, lighting the room and quietening it. The integrated LED runs at 3000K warm white with a 95 CRI rating for accurate colour rendering, and it's DALI dimmable, so light levels can be set and adjusted from a control system. The suspension drop is adjustable from 1700mm to 4200mm, so it can be hung low over a table or higher in a taller space.

Its acoustic core suits open plan offices, meeting rooms and shared workspaces where noise builds up over the course of a day, as well as restaurant booths and busy dining rooms. The rectangular shape also suits kitchen islands and long tables, where a round pendant would feel out of place.

Bover was founded in Barcelona in 1996, when Joana Bover first sketched the idea while helping out on a project for an architect friend. Almost thirty years on, the brand still designs and makes its lighting in Spain, based in Cardedeu near Barcelona. Alongside its hand woven synthetic fibre pieces for outdoor spaces and its intricate wood lattice designs like the Dome family, built from over 170 individually woven beech strips, Bover carries the same Mediterranean design sensibility into more technical pieces like the Noren. The brand opened a US subsidiary in Atlanta in 2012.
