The Nans PF/31.2 XL is the largest flush ceiling fitting in Bover's Nans collection, scaled up from the same idea that shapes the rest of the range: Cala Nans, a secluded cove near Cadaques that can only be reached on foot or by boat. That same natural, textured form carries through into a substantial hand woven shade, built to sit flush against a ceiling rather than hang down from one.

Beige gives the weave a pale, sandy tone that blends easily into stone, render or light timber. Brown reads warmer and closer to natural cane, suiting aged wood or darker exteriors. Red is the boldest of the three, a warm terracotta tone that stands out against plain walls or greenery rather than fading into them. All three share the same hand woven synthetic fibre build over an aluminium and stainless steel frame, so the choice comes down to which tone suits the space.

How It Works

An integrated LED sits inside the shade, rated at 9.5W and 1450 lumens with a warm 2700K colour temperature and a CRI of 90 for accurate colour rendering. Light filters out through the woven fibre rather than shining directly, so it softens the space beneath it instead of glaring down. It works with a Triac dimmer, and the metal surfaces are coated with cataphoresis and epoxy polyester paint to hold up outdoors. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.

Where It Works Best

Because it sits flush to the ceiling rather than hanging down, the Nans PF/31.2 XL suits porches, verandas and covered walkways where headroom is too low for a pendant but the space still needs proper light. Its larger scale means it can light a wider area than the smaller Nans flush fittings, making it a good fit for a generous porch roof or a covered terrace rather than a tight alcove.

Bover was founded in Barcelona in 1996, when a sketch Joana Bover drew for an architect friend grew into the idea for a lighting brand. The company still designs and manufactures from its base in Cardedeu, just outside Barcelona. Outdoors, pieces like the Nans collection show off Bover's hand woven synthetic fibre work, while indoors the brand takes a different craft further, weaving wood lattice fixtures such as the Dome pendant from more than 170 individual strips of beech. Across both, the designs carry a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Bover expanded to the US in 2012, opening a subsidiary in Atlanta.
