A Wave of Woven Light for the Terrace

The Mediterrània S/105 takes its shape from the movement of light on water, a long, fluid silhouette woven from hundreds of individual fibre strands rather than moulded in one piece. At just over a metre across and only 123mm deep, it reads as a sculptural object first and a light fitting second, whether it's switched on or off.

Woven Fibre Built to Live Outdoors

Bover swaps the indoor ribbon weave for a synthetic polyethylene fibre on the outdoor Mediterrània, so the same wave shaped silhouette can be left out through rain and sun without losing its colour or shape. The frame underneath is aluminium and stainless steel, coated with cataphoresis and epoxy polyester paint before the fibre is woven over it, and an opal polycarbonate diffuser sits at its centre where the light source is housed.

How It Works

Light comes from an integrated LED (17.1W, 2064 lumens, 2700K warm white, 90 CRI) that sits behind the opal diffuser rather than shining out through the weave, so the glow stays soft and even. It works with a Triac dimmer, and the drop is adjustable from 260mm up to 2165mm on a 140mm ceiling plate, so it can be set to suit the height of the space it's hanging in. Moonlight Design recommends that all lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.

Where It Works Best

Its wide, low profile suits covered outdoor spaces where you want light to spread across a table rather than down a beam, above a dining table on a covered terrace, along a porch, or under a pergola. It works equally well alone over a small setting or in pairs strung along a longer run of decking.

Bover began in Barcelona in 1996, when Joana Bover turned a sketch drawn for an architect friend's project into a working lighting brand. The company still designs and produces its pieces in Spain, headquartered in Cardedeu near Barcelona, and is known for hand woven outdoor fittings like the Mediterrània alongside intricate wood lattice indoor designs. That Mediterranean sensibility, drawing on natural materials and craft techniques, runs through the whole collection. Bover opened a US subsidiary in Atlanta in 2012.
