A Woven Wood Silhouette for the Tabletop

The Domita M/36 brings the Domita family's woven beech construction down to table lamp scale. Its shade is built from thin curved wood strips that pull in to a narrow waist before flaring back out into a lattice base, so the light glows out through hundreds of small gaps rather than from behind a single shade.

Built From Individual Beech Strips

Each strip of beech is cut and curved separately, then fixed to a slim iron and aluminium frame that gives the shade its hourglass shape. A turned wood disc sits at the top of the frame, echoing the same beech finish used through the rest of the piece.

How It Works

Light comes from a single GU5.3 LED bulb, up to 8W, fitted inside the shade rather than supplied with it. Because the beech strips overlap rather than sit flush, the light diffuses through the gaps in the lattice instead of shining directly, giving a soft glow rather than a hard pool of light. It's dimmable, but only when a dimmable LED bulb is fitted, and an inline switch sits on the 1.5m cable so it can be turned on and off without unplugging it. The electrics are Class II, so no earth connection is needed.

Where It Works Best

Its compact 360mm height suits bedside tables, console tables and reading corners, anywhere a softer, more textured light is preferred over a conventional shade. It works equally well in a living room, bedroom, dining room or hallway.

Bover started in Barcelona in 1996, when Joana Bover sketched a lighting idea for an architect friend's project. The brand still designs and produces its lighting in Spain, based in Cardedeu near Barcelona, and the Domita's woven wood construction sits alongside the larger Dome family as one of its clearest examples of hand built, piece by piece lighting rather than moulded or cast fittings. Bover opened a subsidiary in Atlanta in 2012, taking that same Mediterranean design sensibility to the US market.
