Some lighting designs arrive with a clear point of view. The Igor vertical pendant by Duccio Maria Gambi for Tooy is one of them — a fitting that makes no attempt to be anything other than exactly what it is, and in doing so achieves a quality of presence that more accommodating designs rarely manage. A single vertical element, defined by pure proportions and an almost architectural austerity, hangs from the ceiling with the kind of formal confidence that makes you look twice and then not want to look away.
Duccio Maria Gambi is a Florence based designer whose practice sits at the intersection of art and design, and whose work consistently returns to the relationship between structure, material and time. Igor is a clear expression of that sensibility. The form is rooted in sophisticated geometry — nothing is arbitrary, nothing is decorative, and the result is a fitting that rewards the spaces it inhabits with a quality of considered presence that accumulates rather than announces itself.
The vertical orientation gives this version of Igor a strong axial quality, drawing the eye downward from the ceiling rose along the length of the fitting and anchoring the space below it with a precision that horizontal forms cannot achieve in the same way. In a dining room it creates a focal point of genuine architectural weight. In a living room with generous ceiling height it introduces a vertical element that gives the room scale and intention. In a more intimate space it simply commands the room with quiet authority.
Available in matte black or satin nickel, the two finish options produce strikingly different readings of the same essential form. Matte black gives the fitting a graphic, almost drawn quality — a line of intention against the ceiling. Satin nickel introduces a softer, more reflective quality that changes with the light around it and gives the piece a different kind of depth.
The ripstop fabric diffuser that runs the length of the fitting is a material choice of real intelligence — lightweight, precise in its geometry, and producing a quality of diffused light that is warm, even and thoroughly satisfying. The light from the Igor vertical is not directional or dramatic — it is a presence, an illumination of the space rather than of a single point within it.
Made to order in Tooy's workshop in the Marche region of central Italy, where the brand's manufacturing heritage, rooted in the Giacomozzi family's Gibas company and its tradition of precision craft since 1959, ensures that a fitting of this formal ambition is executed with the precision it demands.
