A Sculpture First, A Chandelier Second
The Spider is built more like a sculpture than a standard chandelier. According to Schwung, its form is drawn from Louise Bourgeois' spider works, reworking the ideas of web, leg and egg into brass and glass. Thirteen dark wires drop from a cluster of ceiling points at staggered lengths, each ending in a single hand blown glass globe, and the globes themselves come in three different sizes across the piece. The result sits somewhere between an insect and a constellation, depending on the angle you catch it from.
In Marble Glass
On this version, every globe is blown in Marble glass, where opaque white strands are worked into the molten glass to leave a soft, milky, internal veining. No two globes come out the same, and because there are thirteen of them hung at different heights on the Spider, the veining reads differently across the piece depending on where the light catches it. It is the most visually layered of the three glass types Schwung uses on the Spider, giving the light a depth that a plain opal globe does not have.
Choose Your Finish
The frame and wires are available in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass, or Polished Nickel, each hand applied at the Namyslow workshop alongside the glass blowing.
How It Works
Thirteen E14 candelabra LED bulbs are fitted, each rated at 5W for 65W in total, in a warm 2700K white, with bulbs included. Dimmable bulbs are supported if you want the fitting on a dimmer circuit. It carries an IP20 rating, for dry indoor rooms only. The piece spans approximately 159cm across and drops 133.7cm, weighing around 36.1kg, so additional ceiling support should be arranged before installation.
Where It Works Best
The veined glass and staggered hang of the globes reward a space where people will actually stand underneath or walk past it, a stairwell, a double height hallway, or a large dining or living room with enough vertical clearance for the full drop. It is a fitting that changes character as you move around or below it, so it suits rooms where it will be seen from several angles rather than a single fixed viewpoint.
Made by Schwung
Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. The studio makes every fitting to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass at its Namyslow workshop. According to Schwung, the Marble glass globes on the Spider are among the most labour intensive it produces, since each one needs to be both individually veined and consistent enough in scale to sit alongside the other twelve.

Questions People Ask
Is every Marble glass globe on this chandelier different?
Yes. The veining in Marble glass is created during blowing, so each globe has its own pattern, and no two of the thirteen on this piece will be identical.
What bulbs does the Spider use, and are they included?
It takes thirteen E14 candelabra LED bulbs, 5W each, and they are included with the fitting.
