One Long Bar, Sixteen Globes
Riegel is German for bar, and the design does exactly what the name suggests, a single straight brass bar runs across the ceiling, with sixteen glass globes suspended beneath it in an even row. Rather than bunching the lights together, Schwung has spread them along the bar's full length, so the Riegel 16 reads as a continuous line of light rather than a conventional many armed chandelier. In Opal Mat glass, that line becomes soft and consistent, since this is the one finish among the three where the glass itself is designed to disappear into an even glow.
In Opal Mat Glass
Opal Mat is Schwung's most diffusing glass. Rather than allowing texture or veining to show through, the mat opal finish spreads the light evenly across the whole surface of each globe, so the bulb itself disappears and what is left is a soft, glareless glow. It is the most versatile and easiest to live with of the three glass types, since it reads as a calm, even wash of light rather than drawing attention to the glass itself. Across sixteen globes in a row, that evenness is what makes the Opal Mat version feel the most like a single continuous light source.
Choose Your Finish
The Opal Mat glass on this Riegel 16 sits on a brass bar available in three finishes: Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass, or Polished Nickel, all hand-applied at Schwung's Poland workshop. Because the glass itself is even and pale, the frame finish does more of the work in setting the character of the fitting, from the softness of Lacquered Brass to the contrast of Black Gunmetal.
How It Works
Sixteen E14 LED bulbs are fitted as standard, each rated under 5W and dimmable with a compatible electronic (ELV or trailing edge) dimmer. Combined, they produce a warm 2700K light with an output in the region of 8,000 lumens. The bar runs to 175.8cm in length, and the complete fitting weighs 31.2kg, so the ceiling point needs to be rated to carry that weight. It is IP20 rated, for dry indoor spaces. Bulbs are included.
Where It Works Best
The Opal Mat Riegel 16's even, diffused glow and generous length make it a natural fit for long dining tables, wide kitchen islands, or open plan living spaces where a broad, soft spread of light matters more than a decorative feature. It is the most adaptable of the three Riegel finishes, so it works in a wider range of rooms than the more textured Dries Ribbon or Marble versions.
Made by Schwung
Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. Every fitting is made to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass at their Namyslow workshop. According to Schwung, the Opal Mat finish is achieved by treating the inside of each mouth blown globe so that light is diffused evenly rather than allowed to pass straight through, which is what gives this version of the Riegel its calm, even glow.

Questions People Ask
Does the Opal Mat glass hide the bulb inside?
Yes, the mat finish diffuses the light evenly across the globe, so you see a soft glow rather than the bulb itself.
Is this the most versatile of the three Riegel glass options?
Generally yes, since the even, diffused light suits a wider range of rooms than the more patterned Dries Ribbon or Marble glass.
