An Adjustable Brass Spotlight That Hides the Ceiling Box

The Schwung Ray Flex J-Box Spotlight pairs the pivoting Ray cylinder with a 125mm solid brass plate, so you get an aimable accent light that also covers an existing ceiling box or rose position. It is the version to choose when you are replacing an old fitting rather than wiring a new point, and when the light needs to be angled onto a wall, a painting or a piece of furniture rather than dropped straight down.

Choose Your Finish

Plate, stem and cylinder are finished as one in your choice of:

• Lacquered Burnished Brass, the warm, lightly aged brass seen in the photographs
• Black Gunmetal, a deep charcoal black
• Polished Nickel, a cool, bright mirror finish
• Classic Bronze, a hand patinated mottled bronze
• Heritage Bronze, a darker, richer hand patinated bronze

Lacquered Burnished Brass has natural variation in its surface, visible in the close up photographs, and the bronze patinas vary more still. Please treat the photographs as a guide to character rather than an exact colour match.

How It Works

Plate Mounted, Tilt and Rotate

The 125mm round plate is 7mm thick and fixes with two brass screws. A short stem drops from the centre to a joint that lets the 55mm cylinder tilt through up to 90 degrees and rotate through up to 135 degrees. The whole fitting projects 143mm from the ceiling and the head swings within a 64mm width, so it stays compact even when angled.

Light Output

One 5W GU10 LED bulb is included, giving 500 to 550 lumens at 2700K warm white. Replacement GU10 lamps up to 15W, 55mm long and 50mm across will fit. The fitting dims with a compatible dimmer, and Schwung specifies suitable dimmer types in the instruction manual.

Where It Works Best

Use the Ray Flex J-Box where an old pendant point sits a little off from what you want to light. Above a sofa it can be turned to wash a large canvas, in a kitchen it can be angled onto the worktop or a run of open shelving, and in a bedroom it can light a wardrobe wall without glaring across the bed. In timber lined rooms, as in Schwung's own photographs, the warm brass and the warm 2700K light sit comfortably together.

Schwung was founded by Rudi Nijssen, an antiques dealer, and Dominique Sente, a goldsmith, and the brand still works the way a goldsmith would: solid brass, hand applied finishes, and every joint and fixing checked by hand in its workshop in Poland. The Ray collection is Schwung at its most minimal, which leaves nowhere for poor finishing to hide.

What is the J-Box version for?
The 125mm plate covers a ceiling junction box or an old ceiling rose position. If you are fitting to a clean, new ceiling point, the standard Ray Flex with its smaller 70mm canopy does the same job with a lighter footprint.

How much can the head move?
It tilts through up to 90 degrees and rotates through up to 135 degrees, enough to point straight down, straight sideways at a wall, or anywhere in between.

What bulb does it take?
A standard GU10. A 5W LED is supplied, and GU10 lamps up to 15W within 55mm length and 50mm diameter can be fitted as replacements.

Can I dim it?
Yes, with a dimmable GU10 lamp and a compatible dimmer. The instruction manual lists the dimmer types Schwung recommends.

Is it bathroom safe?
No. The fitting is IP20 rated and is for dry indoor rooms only.

Does it need professional installation?
