A Fixed Brass Spotlight That Puts One Detail in the Light

The Schwung Ray Fixed Spotlight is a small surface mounted ceiling spotlight made from a single cylinder of solid brass. It does one job and does it quietly: it holds a steady pool of warm light on a chosen spot, whether that is a painting, a textured wall, a fireplace or a favourite object on a shelf. At just 55mm across and 93mm tall it almost disappears against the ceiling, so the eye goes to what it lights rather than the fitting itself.

Choose Your Finish

The Ray Fixed is offered in five Schwung metal finishes, all applied to the same solid brass body:

• Lacquered Burnished Brass, a warm, gently aged brass tone sealed under lacquer
• Black Gunmetal, a deep charcoal black with a soft sheen
• Polished Nickel, a bright, cool mirror finish
• Classic Bronze, a mottled dark bronze patina
• Heritage Bronze, a deeper, richer brown bronze patina

The two bronze finishes are hand patinated, so the exact tone and mottling varies from piece to piece and no two are quite the same. The photographs show the Classic Bronze finish.

How It Works

Fixed Downlight

The cylinder is fixed in position and points straight down from the ceiling, so it suits a spot where the light needs to land directly beneath it, or where several are lined up along a wall to wash it evenly. There is no separate canopy plate, so the body sits directly against the ceiling surface and the supply needs to arrive at the fixing point.

Light Output

One 5W GU10 LED bulb is included, giving 500 to 550 lumens at a warm 2700K. The fitting takes a standard GU10 lamp up to 15W, 55mm long and 50mm across, so the bulb is easy to replace. It can be dimmed when paired with a compatible dimmer, and Schwung lists suitable dimmer types in the instruction manual.

Where It Works Best

Think of the Ray Fixed as a brass alternative to a recessed downlight. A row of them along a living room or hallway wall picks out artwork and gives the wall itself a gentle scalloped wash. Over a kitchen worktop or dining sideboard it adds focused task light without visual clutter. It is also well suited to galleries, hotel corridors and reception areas where a consistent, repeatable accent is wanted.

Schwung is run by Rudi Nijssen, formerly an antiques dealer, and Dominique Sente, a former goldsmith. The Ray collection is one of the brand's simplest designs, and that simplicity depends on the quality of the brass and the finishing, which is done by hand in Schwung's workshop in Poland before each piece is checked and packed.

Questions People Ask

Can the Ray Fixed spotlight be angled?
No. The Ray Fixed points straight down and cannot be tilted or turned. If you want to aim the beam at a wall or picture, the Schwung Ray Flex is the same cylinder on an adjustable head.

What bulb does the Ray Fixed take?
It takes a standard GU10 lamp. A 5W LED is supplied, and any GU10 up to 15W that is no more than 55mm long and 50mm wide will fit.

Is the Ray Fixed dimmable?
Yes, when used with a compatible dimmer and a dimmable bulb. Schwung specifies suitable dimmers in the instruction manual.

Can I fit it in a bathroom?
No. The Ray Fixed is rated IP20, so it is for dry indoor rooms only.

Can I fit it myself?
The Ray Fixed is a mains voltage fitting and we recommend it is installed by a qualified electrician.

How long will delivery take?
