A Fixed Brass Spotlight on a Plate That Covers the Box

The Schwung Ray Fixed J-Box Spotlight is the fixed version of the Ray cylinder mounted on a 125mm solid brass plate. The plate is there to sit over an existing ceiling box or old ceiling rose position, hiding the hole and the fixings and giving the small 55mm cylinder a neat, deliberate base. The light itself is the same calm downward accent as the standard Ray Fixed: a warm pool of light on a picture, a wall or an object below.

Choose Your Finish

Plate and cylinder are finished together in one of five Schwung finishes:

• Lacquered Burnished Brass, soft aged brass under a protective lacquer
• Black Gunmetal, a dark charcoal black
• Polished Nickel, a bright mirror silver
• Classic Bronze, a mottled dark bronze patina as shown in the photographs
• Heritage Bronze, a deeper, warmer bronze patina

The bronze patinas are applied by hand, so the depth of colour and the mottling differ from one fitting to the next and from the photographs.

How It Works

Plate Mounted, Fixed Beam

The 125mm round plate is 7mm thick and fixes to the ceiling with two visible brass screws, one either side of the cylinder. The cylinder, 55mm across and 100mm long, is fixed pointing straight down and cannot be angled. Because the plate covers a standard ceiling box footprint, the J-Box version is the practical choice where a previous light has left a box or marks that the plain Ray Fixed would not hide.

Light Output

A 5W GU10 LED bulb is included, giving 500 to 550 lumens at a warm 2700K. The GU10 base takes replacement lamps up to 15W, 55mm long and 50mm across. The fitting is dimmable with a compatible dimmer, and suitable dimmer types are listed in Schwung's instruction manual.

Where It Works Best

The Ray Fixed J-Box is made for renovations and rewires where the ceiling points are already decided. Swap a tired pendant above a hallway console for one of these and the wall below becomes the feature. Over a kitchen island or bar, a line of them on matching plates reads as a considered detail rather than a compromise. It is equally at home in hotel corridors and bedrooms where a repeated, low key accent is needed.

Schwung designs in house and makes in its own workshop in Poland, working almost entirely in solid brass. Founders Rudi Nijssen, a former antiques dealer, and Dominique Sente, a former goldsmith, built the brand around hand finishing, and even a fitting as small as this one is patinated, assembled and checked by hand before it leaves.

What does J-Box mean?
J-Box is short for junction box. This version of the Ray Fixed has a 125mm plate designed to mount over and conceal a ceiling box or old ceiling rose position, where the standard Ray Fixed has no plate at all.

Can the beam be aimed?
No. The Ray Fixed J-Box points straight down. For an adjustable head on the same plate, see the Schwung Ray Flex J-Box.

Which bulb does it use?
A standard GU10. A 5W LED is supplied and any GU10 up to 15W, no longer than 55mm and no wider than 50mm, can be used as a replacement.

Is it dimmable?
Yes, with a compatible dimmer and a dimmable GU10 lamp. Schwung lists suitable dimmer types in the instruction manual.

Can it go in a bathroom?
No. It is IP20 rated and intended for dry indoor rooms only.
